Also, while I expected the cameo to stink, I liked David Hasselhoff's silly and self-deprecating segment in the film. So what worked? Well, in general, there were less laughs than the show but still some good laughs. Also, the very end featuring SpongeBob resorting to a re-worded Twisted Sister anthem to somehow try to save the day just seems stupid and anticlimactic.
#The spongebob squarepants movie review series#
This is definitely NOT from the TV series and just wasn't all that funny the first few times they mentioned it (but I DO want one of the hats). Apart from these unwelcome moments, the film also suffers some from the continual mention of the "Goofy Goober". The edginess of the humor is, at times, blunted and replaced with poignant moments-a death sentence to cartoons! Fortunately, this only occurs sporadically and some of the more "schmaltzy" moments are punctuated by laughs, but even still, people love SpongeBob because of the laughs and not for deeper meaning. This is definitely true of the SponeBob movie as well. Whereas 15 to 30 minutes of action and laughs can be sustained, with about 90 minutes there is noticeable padding and lulls. I think it's because the fundamental formula that made them good shows is upset when it is stretched to full-length. That's because there is a history of cartoons being stretched into full-length films with less than spectacular results-the best example I can think of off the top of my head is the Powerpuff Girls movie. I had extremely low expectations for this film even before the movie reviewers told us that this was, at best, a mediocre film. So, while I am technically an adult, I think I am still a decent judge of cartoons.

I will first point out that although I am a 40-something parent, I love SpongeBob and many other contemporary cartoons-maybe even more than my kids.
